Quick & Dirty Skirt

This is not the most flattering skirt pattern, but I see it all the time at Renn faires. In fact, I believe this is also the pattern that I used in 6th grade Home Ec class for our Colonial presentation.

  1. Measure your waist. Double the length. Write it down.
  2.
  3. Measure from your natural waist (bellybutton level, or a little higher) to where you want your hemline (ankles, ground, etc). Add approximately 3” to the measurement and write it down.

  1. Cut out a piece of fabric that suit these measurements. If your fabric is too narrow, cut two pieces at half the total waist measurement, but same length.
  2.
  3. Stitch up the side seam/s to create a very wide tube.
  4.
  5. Fold the top part of the tube inside and stitch shut. It should be ½” to 1” deep.
  6.
  7. Hem the bottom to whatever length you want. If the skirt is too short, a strip of fabric can be added to the bottom to lengthen it (it was quite common, and give you a good opportunity to embellish).
  8.
  9. Cut a small hole into the center of the top band (the waist band). Thread yarn or ribbon through a safety pin, and use the safety pin as a shuttle to thread the yarn/ribbon through the waistband and out again.
  10.
  11. Put on skirt, and use the ribbon to draw the waist around you. Tie shut.

Yes. It is supposed to be that bulky.
